 Álvaro Herrero, also known as ‘Mekan @mekanphotography’, has been named Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025.

Underwater photographer Álvaro Herrero, better known in the photography and diving world as ‘Mekan’, has been recognised as Underwater Photographer of the Year 2025, the most prestigious international award in underwater photography. ‘Radiant bond’ a stunning image of a mother humpback whale and her calf has won the award. The breathtaking image shows the young whale rising to the surface to take its first breath.

In addition to his photographic work, Mekan is an ambassador for the diving brand TDS Technical Diving Systems @tdsdive, with whom he collaborates in the promotion of responsible and sustainable diving.

Recognition for his unique style and career

The Underwater Photographer of the Year is a competition that brings together some of the best underwater photographers in the world. In this year's edition, Mekan's image was selected from thousands of entries, standing out for its composition, mastery of light and ability to convey the importance of protecting the oceans.
