Abyss is available with the compact top performer MR52X first stage: the best for a unique high calibre set up. Double DFC system provides a consistent flow of air at any depth, even when breathing simultaneously from both the primary second stage and the octopus. The NCC system and the design of the Abyss second stage with more metal on the front cover, allows this combination to achieve very high performance in cold water. Pre-oriented pressure ports for an ideal placement of hoses even using two independent regulators.
To say this first: Naturally, the regulator retains all the iconic features for extreme applications under ice-cold and deep conditions. But Mares wouldn't justly be the innovation motor among the manufacturers if they "only" rested on the tried and trusted.
The gem from the research and development department in Rapallo (Italy) emerges under the name MR52T (MR stands for military regulator) and boasts the following details: For the first time, a lightweight first stage offers two DFC ports! This way, not only the primary second stage but also the connected Octopus simultaneously enjoys maximum airflow and ease of breathing on the MR52T.
Dynamic Flow Control is the Mares patent that verifiably minimizes the intermediate pressure drop caused by inhalation and ensures constant breathing values – regardless of tank pressure and depth. Through a developmental feat, a second LP port is now equipped with the DFC system. Critical in case of an emergency: The connected Octopus has the same excellent performance criteria as you would expect from the primary regulator. Diving instructors will learn to appreciate this quickly! And something else catches one's eye on the new MR52T stage: On the back, it features a groove-shaped recess. This surface enlargement called NCC system (natural convection channel, Mares patent) ensures a better heat supply to the interior of the first stage, which verifiably improves the cold water characteristics. Incidentally, the same benefit is delivered by the six side openings on the spring chamber.
Ergonomically relevant are the bigger gaps between ports (now just 3/8'' for LP ports) whereby conflicts while connecting multiple hoses and/or transponders are avoided from the getgo.
Last but not least, MR52T first stage features a bigger and handier DIN handwheel.The second stage Abyss is tried and trusted and unchanged: This metal jewel is connected to the first stage by a superflex hose. Bend protection and unbreakable coverplate form a unit, which aqua dynamically diverts the oncoming water perfectly. For better cold water characteristics, the bend protection has several perforations to increase the heat exchange at valve level.
The coverplate of the second stage features the patented mesh-grid. In combination with the side openings, it improves the breathing effort during the inhalation phase and prevents free-flow of the regulator when diving in strong currents. And – as is the case with all Mares regulators – the patented VAD system ensures adequate air supply at any depth, which makes any injector adjustment (which is customary with other regulators) completely unnecessary – even in extreme depth!
