The importance of underwater photography

Table of contents

As divers, we are fortunate enough to enjoy unique experiences every time we dive into the water, but why not make those experiences last forever, rather than simply keeping them in our minds? Photography has that ability; it captures a moment that has already passed before our eyes and makes it eternal, allowing us to relive it visually on a screen whenever we need to, even when we are far from the sea.

That encounter with a dolphin or a shark, the snapshot of a seahorse just as you finish your dive, or when you come across such special species as the ‘nudibranchs’—which are indescribable and tiny—are experiences that, thanks to photography, you can relive as often as you like in all their splendour.

Nowadays, there are endless possibilities for underwater photography, depending on each person’s level and needs.

From underwater housings such as the DIVEVOLK, which allows you to submerge your mobile phone to a depth of 60 metres and control all its features and settings for both video and photography underwater. Its design makes your phone a completely waterproof device, allowing you to use it with complete confidence.

Or compact cameras such as the OM SYSTEM TG-7 (a brand formerly known as Olympus), a multifunctional compact camera that, without the housing, allows you to submerge it to a depth of up to 15 metres (maximum) and, with the housing, is waterproof to a depth of 45 metres.

Thanks to its 12 MP back-illuminated BSI CMOS sensor and versatile 25–100 mm lens, it delivers exceptional image quality in any situation. Its bright F2.0 aperture ensures excellent performance even in low-light conditions. It also features 4K video recording, the option to record in portrait format, and multifunctional features such as microscopic macro mode (our favourite for, for example, photographing nudibranchs or other tiny species, or magnifying a portrait).

Here at Casco Antiguo, we have both cameras in stock, and our experts can advise you on which is best for you based on your skill level and needs. We’ll also advise you on other accessories such as extra lighting, stabilisers, filters and more.

Please feel free to visit us at our Casco Antiguo shop in Madrid at Calle Jorge Juan 118, or get in touch with us.
