Why Is Water Getting Into Your Diving Mask?
You get in the water, everything seems to be going perfectly and suddenly… you notice water inside your mask. Has this ever happened to you? Although it may seem like a mystery, in most cases there is a simple explanation. The problem is usually related to the mask seal.
1. Size matters
A mask that does not fit the shape of your face properly can leave small gaps where water can enter. Not all faces have the same shape, which is why it is important to try the mask before buying it and make sure it seals properly without having to overtighten the strap.
2. Watch out for your hair
A single strand of hair between your face and the silicone skirt can break the seal and create a small channel through which water can leak. Tie your hair back before getting in the water and make sure it is not trapped under the mask skirt.
3. Your moustache can also make a difference
Facial hair, especially underneath the nose, can make it difficult for the silicone skirt to seal completely. If you have a moustache, pay particular attention to this area and find the fit that works best for you.
4. Is your mask too tight?
Although it may seem contradictory, tightening your mask too much does not guarantee a better seal. Excessive pressure can deform the silicone skirt and actually encourage water to enter. Your mask should feel secure, but comfortable.
5. Excessive facial movement can also be the cause
Talking, laughing or moving your face too much can temporarily affect the seal. This is completely normal. Try to identify when it happens and keep your facial muscles relaxed.
